Chronicles in Ordinary Time 288: Do not be daunted by the enormity of the world’s grief…

Same title above, different words.

The day Álvaro Múnera retired from bullfighting

I could not find the name of the artist who painted this image. People all over the world have posted it on Facebook. I watched the debacle in the Oval Office and the above is how the debacle appeared to me.

“Trump’s meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky was an embarrassment to our country and puts us all at risk. NATO held its first emergency meeting without the US since its founding in 1949—Elon Musk tweeted that he wants to leave NATO and the UN, if they don’t leave us first.

I don’t know if this comes from 40 years of being part of the Evangelical Church, or just my hatred for the two men who are most often in the news these days.

I wonder if we in the Barely-United States collectively DO deserve the destruction of the country I have lived in for 73 years… The chaos could have been avoided if a relatively small number of voters—less than 2.6 million—voted for Harris/Walz. Roughly equal to 1/2 of the population of Dallas, Texas. In American Presidential elections one can win the popular vote, but not the vote of the Electoral College. Stupid legislation from a different century.

This process is described in Article Two of the Constitution. The merit of the electoral college system has been a matter of ongoing debate in the United States since its inception at the Constitutional Convention in 1787, becoming more controversial by the latter years of the 19th century, up to the present day. wikipedia

I did not vote for the person in the Oval Office; nor did anyone in my extended family; nor did a large percentage of the voters in Portland, Oregon. Oregon as a whole, has a lot of people who probably voted for the guy. People did not listen to the three-hour speeches [I listened to highlights] he made. Had they done so, none of the chaos at present would exist because he would have lost the election.
He vowed Retribution, not defending the service of Republican goals.  The 34 felonies, of which he was found guilty in a Federal Court trial, in the end did not carry a sentence nor a fine. Instead, the Judge in the trial, through a legal action, deemed that Donald J. Trump will forever be known as the Convicted Felon who became President.
He vowed Retribution. We are receiving Retribution primarily through the illegal Department of Government Efficiency. And cowardice among the Republicans elected to Congress. Or Avarice.

When life seems out of control [I am rarely in control], I fall back on The Man of La Mancha, a gift I received in my Senior year of high school—a gift that changed the rest of my life:

Don Quixote:
Well, Sancho – how dost thou like adventuring?
His servant, Sancho Pancha:

Oh, marvelous, Your Grace. But it’s peculiar – to me this great highway to glory looks exactly like the road to El Toboso where you can buy chickens cheap.
Like beauty, my friend, ’tis all in the eyes of the beholder. Only wait and thou shalt see amazing sights.

The waiting is always the difficult part for me.
I used to think I was a very patient person.
Patience requires a certain amount of stability and an understanding of a situation. Hard to find in these times.
